the windows start menu is just so horrible... they _had_ to do the "Start Search" really... :) with multiple users some programs are installed for you, some for all, if you try to re-arrange stuff you're in danger of changing something for someone else as well... With vista I have completely given up on trying to organize that, I have my main programs on the top of the list in the start menu and for everything else I use the search. Mac OS is just so much more fun...

PS: how hard can it be to let me re-arrange my open programs in the taskbar?

Amen.

On the speed launching, I use Launchy on XP to do this already, and Quicksilver on OS X.

Ah, right. Start menu search is good, I do agree. But then, did you see OS X' Spotlight? It's like that on steroids. Basically, hit alt-space, type in something and hit enter. Launches applications, searches for file names, searches inside files, functions as calculator, searches in your browsing history and so on.

Aside from D3D10 (which I can't classify as either "good" or "bad") there is one useful thing in Vista - the new start menu. Now you can hit "windows" button (on the keyboard), type the name of the application, hit Enter and it runs - without any mouse movements/clicks.
